Radical Firearms AR-15s start at $599, putting them squarely in the budget rifle category. But after testing their 16″ 5.56 NATO RF-15 and 10.5″ pistol builds side by side with premium brands, the results might surprise you.
Build Quality & Materials
Radical uses 7075-T6 aluminum receivers with Type III hardcoat anodizing – the same spec as Colt and Daniel Defense. Their barrels are 4150 chrome-moly steel, button-rifled with a 1:7 twist. We’ve put 2,000 rounds through an RF-10.5 without any noticeable throat erosion. The M-LOK handguards use steel barrel nuts instead of aluminum, a detail most budget brands skip.
Accuracy Performance
With Federal Gold Medal Match 77gr SMK ammo, our test RF-16 averaged 1.25 MOA at 100 yards from a bench rest. The 10.5″ pistol held 2 MOA with M193 ball ammo – better than most short-barreled ARs at twice the price. Radical’s barrels are headspaced correctly out of the box, a common pain point with budget ARs.
Reliability Testing
We ran 500 rounds of steel-cased Tula through an RF-15 without cleaning. Zero failures to feed or eject. The nitride BCG showed minimal wear. Aftermarket Compatibility
Every Radical model we’ve tested accepts standard AR parts. Their uppers mate perfectly with Aero Precision lowers. The buffer tubes are mil-spec diameter, unlike some “commercial spec” budget rifles. We’ve successfully swapped triggers, stocks, and handguards without modification.
Value Proposition
At $599-$899, Radical delivers 90% of a $1,500 rifle’s performance. Their complete uppers ($399 at Buyfrtnow) make excellent truck guns or training rifles. The only corners cut are in the furniture – upgrade the stock and grip for another $100 and you’ve got a duty-grade weapon.
